A dental crown, or cap, is a restoration that can be used for a number of purposes. One of the most common uses of a dental crown is to restore a tooth that is significantly damaged or decayed. The crown is custom made to fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, in order to restore the tooth to its original shape and size.
At PGS Dentistry we offer two cosmetic crown options: traditional all-porcelain crowns for full coverage of a damaged tooth, and Bioclear — a modern, minimally-invasive composite system that's ideal for closing black triangles, restoring chipped front teeth, and rebuilding worn edges without removing healthy tooth structure.
Choosing between them depends on how much of the tooth is left, where it is in your mouth, and what you want it to look like. Our dentists will walk you through the trade-offs honestly — including longevity, cost, and how each option will look next to your other teeth.

Diagnosis & options
We evaluate the tooth with X-rays and photos, then discuss whether a porcelain crown, Bioclear restoration, or another option fits best.

Preparation
For porcelain crowns, the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. Bioclear typically requires little to no drilling — the tooth is cleaned and isolated instead.

Impressions / scans
Digital scans capture the exact shape needed. The crown or Bioclear restoration is custom-built to match neighboring teeth.

Placement
Porcelain crowns are bonded permanently after a fitting. Bioclear is sculpted and cured in a single visit using clear matrices for a seamless finish.

Care & longevity
Both options can last 10–20+ years with normal hygiene. We'll give you specific care instructions — and a night guard if grinding is a risk.
Common questions about porcelain & bioclear crowns.
What's the difference between porcelain and Bioclear?
Porcelain crowns cover the entire visible tooth and are best for severely damaged or already-prepared teeth. Bioclear uses high-strength composite to rebuild teeth without removing healthy structure — great for chips, gaps, and worn edges.
Which crown is right for me?
It depends on the tooth's condition, location, and your aesthetic goals. We'll show you both options on your specific case so you can choose with full information.
How long do porcelain crowns last?
10–20+ years is common with good hygiene. Avoiding chewing on ice, pens, or hard candy helps. A night guard adds longevity if you grind your teeth.
Is the procedure painful?
No — the area is fully numbed during preparation and placement. Minor sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and resolves on its own.
Does insurance cover crowns?
