X-rays are essential for finding cavities between teeth, infections at tooth roots, bone loss from gum disease, and dozens of other issues invisible to the naked eye. PGS Dentistry uses fully digital X-ray systems at every location.
Compared to traditional film, digital X-rays expose you to up to 90% less radiation, produce a clearer image, and appear instantly on a screen so we can review them with you in real time. There's no waiting for film to develop.
We follow ADA-recommended frequency guidelines, which means we don't take X-rays at every visit unless your situation calls for it. Bitewings (cavity-detection) are typically done every 1–2 years; full-mouth X-rays every 3–5 years for healthy adults.

Lead apron protection
Every patient gets a lead apron and thyroid collar. The amount of radiation is already extremely low — we make it lower.

Sensor placement
A small digital sensor replaces the old film card. It's no more uncomfortable than the old version, and the whole exposure takes a fraction of a second.

The image appears on screen immediately — no developing, no waiting. The dentist can review it with you right away.

Common questions about digital x-rays.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes — modern digital dental X-rays use extremely low radiation. A full-mouth set exposes you to about the same radiation as a few hours of normal background exposure from the environment.
Do I need X-rays every visit?
No. We follow ADA guidelines. Most healthy adults need bitewing X-rays every 1–2 years and a full series every 3–5 years. Higher-risk patients may need them more often.
Can I refuse X-rays?
You can — but we may not be able to fully diagnose or treat without them. We'll explain why we recommend them in your case before taking them.
What about pregnancy?
We avoid non-emergency X-rays during pregnancy when possible. If imaging is essential, lead protection makes the exposure to the fetus essentially zero.
Are digital X-rays really lower radiation than film?
Yes — typically 70–90% less. The digital sensor is far more sensitive than film, so it captures the same diagnostic detail with much less exposure.
